New York State Assembly Opposes Bush Veto on Iraq. Antiwar protestors condemn veto at Brighton rally. By Lee Price (Thursday, April 3, 2007) By a 94-34 vote, the New York State Assembly approved Monday a resolution urging President Bush not to veto a bill passed by Congress and setting a timeline for bringing American troops home from Iraq. Similar measures were passed by the California and Iowa state senates in February. New York State’s resolution urged the President to sign H.R. 1591 which includes a timetable for withdrawal of US troops from Iraq beginning July 1st, and requiring the government of Iraq to meet certain diplomatic and security conditions for continued American support. The resolution says in part that “It is the sense of this Assembled Body that this legislation should be signed into law by the President…and that troops begin deployment from Iraq under the terms of this legislation”. President Bush expected veto came just two days later. Hundreds of demonstrations opposing the veto and calling for an end to the war in Iraq were held across the United States on Thursday, including one here in Brighton, NY. “Stop this endless war” said one sign. “Let’s veto Bush” said another. “The resolution passed by the New York State Assembly* drew cheers from the crowd”, said Nancy Braiman, an activist and rally organizer. *(see the full text of the New York State Assembly’s resolution on Iraq below).
